Choose Your Email Address

Step 2 | 10 minutes

Instructions

In this step, you’ll learn about the importance of your personal email address as you communicate with colleges and potential employers. Complete the reading, watch the 1 ½ minute video, and then complete your Action Item for Step 2.

Reading

Your email address is part of presenting yourself professionally. You might have an email address that works fine with friends and family, but it's wise to make sure it's representing you in a positive light.

An email address given to you by your high school goes away when you graduate. Unless you have another email address, you could lose access to critical information from colleges and employers!

Action Item

To complete Step 2, review the email addresses you have and choose one to use for all your correspondence with colleges or employers. If you need to create a new one, consider creating a Google Gmail account. When your email address is ready to go, make sure you’ve entered it in your Profile in the CFNC.org Dashboard.

Additional Resources and Tips

For Students

Make sure your email is readily accessible on your mobile phone, and consider creating email filters or alerts for high-priority colleges or potential employers.

For Parents

Here are a few tips for using CFNC.org for your family. It’s best for each family member to have their own CFNC.org account. Each account requires a unique username and email address, and it can create issues if family members start to share the same account. For instance, information for the incorrect person could be inserted into various fields and forms impacting functions such as applications, transcripts, career assessments, and residency. Younger students could use their school-issued email address and then change it to a personal email address when they are in high school.
